The most often used air compressors are portable rotary screw compressors. You can put the pressure settings from 100-350 PSI. You can find them ranging 65-1600 cubic feet per minute. What you need depends on the tools you will be using. A pro will usually use something with 185 CFM, which can get the job done while powering more than one tool at a time.

You can mount a truck compressor in the bed or underneath the hood of your truck. This is great to save some space and they use your truck’s engine for power, so they are easy to maintain. You must have your truck running to power the compressor, which can be a deterrent.

You can get a compressor that is mounted in your truck bed called a deck mounted compressor. Since these have their own engines then won’t need you to power your truck for them to work. They need engine maintenance and fuel as well since they aren’t powered by your truck.

Other compressors run off electricity, while others use gas. In both kinds the air is in the holding tank and the tools are attached by a hose. There are gauges on the compressor that will show the pressure, which is valve regulated.

You can look at a Quincy air compressor which are very good. They offer a rotary screw compressor, which has 10-350 horsepower. They make quality machines that will last for a while, they have larger models and smaller ones.

A Husky brand air compressor is great for use in your home. The tank has 135 PSI and holds 1.75 gallons. You can run all kinds of tools on it and are so easy to carry around with the telescope handle. You can get the oil free pump to maintain it well.

If you choose the Husky air compressor that holds 4 gallons you will be getting upt 125 PSI and is great for small jobs around the house.

Newer Craftsmen compressors have given me problems. (Loud, underpowered, cheap parts)

Porter Cable is decent, but I tend to think of them less powerful/smaller - better for a staple gun than an impact wrench.

look at Ingersol Rand - one name brand that has been in the air tool business for a long time. expensive, but seems to be of good quality.

in my experience you really do get what you pay for when it comes to an air compressor.

Look at SCFM instead of CFM

I’d build my own - 30 gallon tank, 5hp electric motor, compressor to match.

One of the most important factors to consider when purchasing a new Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system for your home or business is the operating cost over the life of the unit. There are two numbers that indicate the energy efficiency of an HVAC system: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which is a measure of overall efficiency, and Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF), which is a measure of heating efficiency for heat pumps. The Trane XL5i has a high SEER rating of 16 and an HSPF of 9. It only takes a SEER of 15 and and HSPF of 9 to qualify for a tax credit in the U.S. This premium Trane HVAC deal strikes the balance of providing quiet comfort while not sacrificing energy economy. It also comes with Trane’s standard 10-year warranty on compressor, coils, and internal functional parts.

Aside from having high energy efficiency, the XL5i is the quietest of all of Trane’s single-speed heat pumps—you will not have to tolerate a noisy heat pump while sitting by the pool, tending to the garden, or talking on the phone. This is due in part to sound insulation on the compressor and an advanced fan system. Its baked-on powder coat finish and non-corrosive base pan will resist rust and give the unit an attractive appearance for years and years. Its fully louvered sides will protect your investment, so you don’t have to worry about the fins on the coils being damaged in the very first hailstorm.

With Trane’s 2/4TEE Variable Speed Air Handler, this quiet comfort will extend inside the home as well. The 2/4TEE has twelve fan speeds, compared to only three speeds on most others on the market today. This allows the 2/4TEE air handler to operate at the lowest speed required for your indoor environment’s immediate needs. Your HVAC system can then operate with the highest energy efficiency, but can also keep running as quietly as possible.

Another design feature that keeps the system running quietly and efficiently is Trane’s Air-Tite construction, which utilizes a system of special gaskets and thermal seals to keep conditioned air in its place. You can also easily control the level of comfort with the XL800 Deluxe Programmable Digital Thermostat using its interactive touch screen and easy to read back-lit display.

You can enhance the comfort level provided with this system by adding Trane’s revolutionary CleanEffects whole building air filtration system. CleanEffects has been shown to remove 99.98% of airborne allergens and 99% of flu virus. This is several times better than what can be accomplished by HEPA filters, but that is not what makes it so revolutionary. HEPA filters work by forcing air at higher pressure through tiny pores in the filter medium, which robs energy from the air handling system. The departure in design that makes the CleanEffects air filtration system work does not require high pressure, so it not only does a better job at cleaning the air, but it does so without sacrificing energy efficiency.

If quiet comfort is your priority but you also want long-lasting and energy efficient climate control, this system engineered by Trane experts is one of your best options.

I am an avid Do it yourselfer and wanted to get a compact air compressor for a variety of projects. Today I ran into a great deal. An almost new Husky 4 gal. pancake compressor for 20 bucks.

My excitement went down when I got home and read the sticker it had on the side. It said it was not recommended for finish or framing nailers.

Actually, the list was a lot longer than that but these are the two main things I would want to use it for.

Does anybody know if this is more of a suggestion or a rule? The other thing I might want to use is the engine washer but that’s about it.

Thank you
0.8 CFM@90psi

Finish nailers require 60-80 psi. A framing nailer requires 120 psi. If your compressor doesn’t have enough air behind it the framing nailer will not fire. If it does fire okay, your only limited by your volume of air……which simply put means you have to nail slower to allow the compressor to catch up. I have a Porter-Cable 150 psi pancake compressor……it will run anything….including a roofing nailer.

I have a Badge Air 20 gallon compressor…it has an electric motor that belt drives a two cylinder pump.
everything seems to be working on it, there are no leaks…both intake and exhaust valves seem to be working fine…when you start it you feel it sucking air if you put your hand over the intake…but once it reaches 60 psi tank pressure it stops….not the motor or pump..those keep right on running, it just quits sucking air….even the intake valves stop moving…..anyone have any ideas?…tried swapping out gaskets in the pump…thought maybe there was not enough compression, but didnt do any good….
This is an oiled pump could there be a compression loss from being low on oil? if so whats the best weight to put in it?
Ive had the head and cylinders off to replace bottom end gaskets…..rings look to be in excellent shape as do the cylinder walls

Sounds like the check valve at the inlet to the tank is leaking or sticking.

We have had our compressor down for 2 or 3 days due to power outages. There was never a problem. I wouldn’t wait longer than that. Also I would keep the water usage from things like washing clothes down until it is fixed.
