Part 9 of a multi-part video series:
Replacing the Timing Belt and Water Pump on the Honda H22A1 Engine in a 1995 Honda Prelude.

Recap of how the crank pulley/harmonic balancer was finally removed with general tips on handling difficult bolts like this.

I ended up hiring a heavy equipment mechanic who was working on some bulldozers up in this part of the mountains and I saw him on our road and flagged him down to swing by and take a shot at this bolt. So he ended up having the exact same impact wrench as me .. however .. he had a whole heck of a lot more AIR PRESSURE. While my little air compressor might get up to 100 PSI effective pressure on a good day and just for a few seconds, this guy’s monstrous compressor in his monstrous crane truck had 225 PSI in large tanks that never even faded. His air compressor was driven directly off of his DT466 International Diesel engine. Man it blasted his wrench hard on that bolt. Sounded twice as fast in the RPMs as my little compressor could provide and sounded a LOT more powerful like that and by the way it jerked in his arms it was obviously applying some serious blasts of torque.
THIS DARN BOLT EVEN GAVE HIM A LOT OF TROUBLE! He tried 2 or 3 good shots at it. Then he switched his wrench to the tightening direction for 2 reasons: 1. in case the bolt was threaded in reverse although I knew it wasn’t. 2. Sometimes a way to free a stuck bolt is to actually try tightening it a little bit and then sometimes that can help break it loose. Well on is 5th try or so it came off. What a great feeling after all that ordeal. Cool guy too and he was only going to charge me a half hour but I insisted on paying him a full hour because it was pretty much a full hour and he really did a lot for me and had to maneuver his big truck up our wacky deep-ditch-lined narrow roads.

About the attempt I made with the propane torch. Folks say that propane is not even hot enough for this and the trick to free a bolt with a torch means using an oxy-acetylene or similar for a LOT of heat, not a little plumber’s propane torch. Again the rubber in the harmonic balancer makes this a bad idea.

So, you better have a really good powerful impact wrench. Ours are Ingersol Rand 600 ft lb models.
You better have a SERIOUS amount of air pressure like 200 to 225 PSI and a big tank on your big compressor so that air pressure doesn’t drop too fast when your tools are running.

As much as I hate to buy specialized tools from car manufacturers and as much as I hate fighting with 6 foot breaker bars underneath cars jack stands on a slope on gravel .. that Honda crank pulley tool is seeming like a better idea now. I wonder how hard it really is to crack that bolt using one of those? Has anyone ever had to do hand to crank combat with one of those and can say how hard a sticky one is?

Anyhow, unfortunately I did not get any video of the heavy equipment mechanic getting my crank bolt off, and that would have been cool video. Man his crane/service truck was a big rusty old diesel monster but it did the job that’s for sure!

At the end of this video after covering the crank pulley issues in full detail, we remove the upper timing cover which is held in place by 2 10mm bolts. Then we remove all 6 bolts of the lower timing cover.

In the next video we remove the lower timing cover itself. Some cleaning of the engine and surrounding area and parts has already occurred, but there is generally a lot of thick oily gunk and dirt all around here especially on the lower timing cover and around the engine block and oil pan. Multiple passes will be made to cleaning everything outside of and inside of the timing covers and all removed and surrounding parts as we work and only a little bit of that cleaning was video taped. Citrus engine degreaser, water, alcohol, high pressure air, brake cleaner, paper towel, q-tips, small scraping tools .. were the things used for all the cleaning involved. Following videos detail the special issues of cleaning the actual mating surfaces for the water pump.

This is the best off the shelf DIY STIRLING ENGINE start we have come up with so far. This Stirling Engine has shown signs of successful operation. It also works excellent as a Steam Engine. I have another compressor that I am converting into a DC motor:-)

These compressors cost about $100 on EBAY. Make sure you buy the compressor pump at a 90 degree angle.

Made from plumbing parts and some other stuff, i used parts anyone could find at home depot to make this, and it works. However, i did use my vertical mill to help form the piston and various other parts. It would be a bit harder with hand tools.

I bought this 5hp, 150PSI, 20 gallon Craftsman Professional compressor on Friday (2/13) from a concrete construction company for $26. This is the engine that was converted from an old special tilt piston air compressor. This is the exact same principal from a certain type of “Air Hogs” plane engine. In the opener the engine was running at 35-50 psi and the second start was around 75-80 psi. Top RPMS so far is 1700 at 110 PSI. The timing still needs some work.
